Ok I actually have a great tip for this. Movie nights the kids get a “snack plate” for dinner. Like a blend of a charcuterie board and veggie and fruit tray. I put all their favorites and sneak in new foods. All arranged super cute. It’s the only time I’m full on Pinterest mom. Then as the movie goes on, the snacking continues. With the lights low and they are semi distracted they eventually try everything. The new foods go last but eventually everything is gone. I give them lots of dipping sauces like humus, dressings etc. The key is to put it all one one big board. The kids eat fast trying things because they are afraid someone else will and they will miss out. They have discovered they love radishes, bell peppers, salami, cheeses, spicy things, sour things…

Daycares with commercial kitchens would make a killing preparing to-go family dinners to hand to parents as they pick up their kids. When mine were little I would have forked over the money to get that prep time back and avoid fast food.

I was given a “report” by the fire inspector on how sprinkler systems needed to be set up to allow a 1500 square foot retail tenant to move into an existing shopping center space. I took the page and lifted it up for everyone in the room to see. “I would like everyone to see and acknowledge that the inspector has just handed me an ad from a sprinkler company” And no rebuttals were made. It’s just how it is.

A while ago I helped a lady who owned a Mexican restaurant and had to close it but leased it to a pawn shop for a short lease. That pawn shop sold to a national chain who tried to renegotiate and take advantage of her by threatening to leave. This is her sole income so her son called me for help. I’ve worked on a lot of pawn shop deals over the years and with state legislation, opening a new location is close to impossible. Existing locations are very valuable to operators. I told the landlord and her son to do nothing and just let the clock run and if she did nothing at all she could expect her annual income to double. I didn’t make a fee on that advice but I did get something pretty valuable at Christmas. Locals know if your tamales come to you like this and from a sweet lady on the south side that ran a restaurant in her younger years… You are about to have the best tamales you’ve ever had. One of these bad boys made it into my Sons’ classroom. They sting real bad. Picture all the screaming from the middle school girls and a teacher with a can of raid trying to drown it in vain. My 12 year old tells them all to chill, walks up and says “you have to cut them in half” takes out his knife and disposes of it. As he tells me the story I realize that’s why I’m being called in by the principal. “Yeah. Mom, see if you can get my knife back” The principal hands it to me. “It’s ok, he’s not in trouble, we know he is a country boy. He just can’t bring it again.” 🤠

I remember sitting in a meeting with the city telling me I now needed to sprinkle a single suite of an older retail center. I asked to see the code and they gave me a sheet of paper. I looked at it and said “I would like everyone in the room to acknowledge I was just handed a marketing flyer for sprinkler systems”

The early years of parenting are very hard. So if you are the thick of it with babies and toddlers let me encourage you with something. My 12 year old just taught himself to make mozzarella and it’s fantastic. Brighter days are ahead.

I either completely wasted a Saturday or just discovered a new hobby. I could not find a simple little program to teach my kids typing. Everything had a ton of malware or included chat rooms I didn’t want for my elementary age kids. I also wanted one that would help them with their spelling and vocabulary words. So I gave Ai a try and built my own. I have ZERO coding knowledge and basic tech skills. This was my first ai project. It took me several hours because I kept adding features and had to learn how to “talk” to the developer to get the results I wanted. I’ve worked with a software developer before and when I started talking to the system like I did our developer, it worked better. A few things I noticed: 1) user management and databases were tricky. Creating the program was easy but tracking progress, logins, teacher accounts and assignments were hard to “stick”. It wouldn’t track progress and users kept getting lost. So the “developer” had to be trained and I had to google the correct terminology to describe what I wanted. Creating the relationships with parent accounts and teacher accounts was easy once I learned to communicate better. 2) describing the UI I wanted was frustrating and I gave up. Screen shots, arrows and lots of descriptive text got us this far, which isn’t far at all. Alignment and text wrapping cannot be taken for granted. 3) you can’t assume it knows to get outside information, you have to tell it. I wanted it to create sentences to practice typing using vocabulary words and it kept creating hilariously wrong sentences that kept me and the kids laughing, to make it actually create real sentences using the vocabulary words it kept wanting me to give it the definitions and then it just described each word exactly as I wrote it. I finally had to tell it to use a dictionary api and only use sentences found in the dictionary. That worked. All in, we created a usable website (designed for desktop since it is a typing tutor). I plan on sharing it with the kids’ classes because we were all looking for something like this and we will actually use this regularly. Would love to know what you think! I was 18 and just moved to the U.S. and walked into a staffing agency asking for any job at all. I was assigned to temp for an insurance agency admin that was out on maternity leave. They gave me the wrong job sheet and sent me to a family office that owned office and retail investments instead. They were confused. I was confused. They interviewed me anyways and I worked there for 6 years while going to college at night. I was promoted a few times before graduating and ended up as the property manager for their San Antonio office and retail portfolio. I’ve been in the industry ever since.

We are typically the buy it and run it till the wheels fall off kind of people but we might have made a mistake with our last vehicle purchase. Several of our friends were all in the same spot a few years ago and after we all researched we all ended up buying new (to us) Ford Expeditions. Now that we are all over the 150K mile marker, ALL of my friends are having transmission and engine problems. They are all telling me to sell it and get something new. All the windows in our house need to be replaced. What tips does Twitter have for me? Who should I avoid? Who should I call? Almost all windows are west facing directly in the unobstructed sun. It’s actually cooler on the outside glass of my oven door with the oven set at 350 than it is to put my hand on the glass of my window at 4pm. The windows are all wonky and many are sized irregular and now is the time to address that as well to regain some symmetry. Give me your best ideas for products and vendors. Hit a deer tonight going 65mph. First thought: “Wow I’m glad my husband made me put a grill guard on my SUV” Second thought: “Crap, now I’ll never hear the end of this from my husband on why he made me put a grill guard on my SUV” He’s been going on and on about it now for over an hour. I asked him if I tweeted about him being right if he would stop talking about it and he said “yes, for tonight”

My hot take is that most American families over schedule their kids. Sports, dance, music, camps, vacations, etc. We gotta normalize a little boredom every now and then.
