You guys. What a magical sunset. I pulled over at this historic homestead to photograph it, and I knew this shot was special, but, I didn't know just how special it was until I got home. Do you see it? 😍 Straight ahead, on the fence, facing the mountains but looking left.

Had a little visitor on our deck earlier today. It's a juvenile American Robin.

A magical thing always happens at Garden of the Gods. After a good rain, a couple of large puddles form atop one of the Central Garden hikes and with a creative eye, you can get some stunning reflection shots up there. This is from yesterday.

This is the craziest night sky shot I've ever taken. There's air glow, red light on the horizon from the blinking lights of wind turbines over the hill, AND if you zoom in, you can see a huge storm system lit up from lightning in the distance. It almost looks like a detonation.

Look how beautiful the male mountain bluebird is. These are my favorite summertime birds in Colorado. I am kicking myself in the butt for not having my 150-600mm lens to photograph this beauty. This is 200mm.

I'm resisting the urge to post more photos from Friday night, but this was one of the prettiest sunsets I've seen in a long time. I could tell it was going to be a stunner the moment the sky began to turn gold.

You ever feel yourself losing interest in your passions and hobbies? I have literally no passion for my photography business right now. I know the season is slow, but even going out and shooting feels like a chore. I just have no drive right now. Not to sort, not to edit, not to go for a walk or hike, like, it feels mundane to me.

I will post a link to the actual petition in the comments, but here are the basics: "🚨 NEW CPW CITIZEN PETITION ALERT 🚨 📷 Wildlife Photography & Artistic Rendition Permit Petition submitted to Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission: A new citizen petition has been submitted to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission requesting the creation of a new annual permit requirement for commercial wildlife photographers and artists. The petition was submitted by Patt Dorsey on July 23, 2026. 📌 Petition Summary The petition requests that CPW create a Wildlife Photographer/Artist Permit requiring anyone who sells, licenses, or commercially distributes photographs or artistic depictions of Colorado wildlife to obtain an annual permit. The petitioner proposes either: * Amending 2 CCR 406-0-018 (Sale of Wildlife) to include commercial wildlife photography and artwork, or * Creating a separate CPW regulation specifically addressing commercial wildlife imagery. 🤑 Proposed Permit Fees The petition proposes a tiered annual fee structure: * Colorado Resident Individual: $35/year * Non-Resident Individual: $100/year * Commercial Entity: $250/year 📷 Activities That Would Require a Permit Under the proposed rule, permits would apply to commercial uses including: * Sale of wildlife photographs and digital images * Licensing wildlife imagery to publications, advertisers, or stock platforms * Sale of wildlife artwork * Merchandise featuring wildlife photography or art * Monetized social media content where wildlife imagery is a primary driver * Online marketplace sales such as Etsy or similar platforms 🦌 Petitioner’s Argument The petitioner argues that Colorado wildlife is a publicly managed resource and that individuals who commercially profit from wildlife imagery should contribute financially toward conservation in the same way hunters, anglers, and trappers contribute through license fees, habitat stamps, and federal excise taxes. The petition states that current wildlife funding relies heavily on traditional wildlife users while commercial wildlife photographers and artists can generate income from Colorado wildlife without a direct contribution to CPW conservation programs. ⚖️ Proposed Scope The permit would apply statewide and would cover wildlife images regardless of whether they were created on: * CPW-managed property, * Other public lands, or * Private property. ✍️ Public Comment Consideration!!! The petition requests that the CPW Commission schedule a rule-making hearing and allow public comment regarding the proposed permit’s scope, fees, and implementation." I already sent them my comment and if this affects you, you should, too. If you're a small business owner, photographer, sell wildlife prints, or even just post to social media as a monetized account and you're just traveling through Colorado and post pictures of Colorado wildlife, this will affect you. I am enraged by this money grab. I tried searching for this person, Patt Dorsey, and a couple names popped up, however, if it's the one I think it is, she is the Director of Conservation Operations, Mountain West at The National Wild Turkey Federation for Colorado's chapter. Nationally, they're worth $60 MILLION. How many states have turkeys??? In a recent report for Colorado's chapter, they boasted about how well they are doing financially, but it simply ISN'T ENOUGH. So, they want more, of course. And shortly after that report was published, Patt Dorsey devised this evil plan to secure more funding because Colorado Parks and Wildlife has an ACTIVE partnership with Mountain West at The National Wild Turkey Federation. This is a money grab. As a small business owner and photographer who already pays quarterly municipal, city, and state taxes... on top of the cost of doing business, i.e., gas milage, permit fees, entry fees to wildlife areas, parking fees, tax license fees, and whatever other costs it takes to plan a photography trip, I am honestly disgusted by this petition. Anyway, I took a few relevant screenshots to back my claims. I will also post the link to the petition below, and from there, you can access the public comment section and strongly tell them NO. Please and thank you.

I photographed my first full moon rising from the horizon tonight! Isn't the Sturgeon moon beautiful? This almost didn't happen. I was walking along a trail and I was looking in the wrong direction for the moon (long story), and where I thought it was going to rise, there were clouds, so I decided to walk back to my car. I decided to get out my PhotoPills app and check the AR mode again, and pointed it where I thought it would be (wasn't there, no surprise) and turned until I found it and then looked at the horizon and BAM, there it was, just a tiny bit of the top coming up FAST. I sprinted back into place and watched it rise from the horizon. I almost didn't even leave the house tonight. I'm so glad I did. 😍

This may be one of my favorite Milky Way shots to date. I actually love the red glow on the horizon from the wind turbine lights.
