i can’t wait to be a mom one day. when we ask young girls what they want to be when they grow up, saying this should be more than enough. doesn’t make it any less of a dream, or mean they don’t have others too. family is one of the most beautiful things in this world.

heisenberg’s uncertainty principle is a cornerstone of quantum mechanics. but upon a closer look, past the particles and the math (or maybe somewhere in between), you’ll see a kind of poetry: reflections of your choices, relationships and unanswered questions. back in my freshman year at johns hopkins, i took a class on this. combining poetry, philosophy, and physics, i learned that cultural production can be used to think deeply about the physical world. for example, parmenides, according to plato, reasoned that everything is either in motion or at rest. but to get from one state to another, there must be something in between, a state that is neither. so let’s think about heisenberg - the more precisely you measure a particle’s momentum, its position could be anywhere in the universe. the more precisely you know its position, its momentum could be literally anything. tldr, if you focus on a particle’s position, you blur its motion; focus on the particle’s motion, you lose clarity on where it is. you can’t do both at once. this is built into the idea of observation itself. jorge luis borges, at a philosophical level, pointed to the same truth we now see even echoed in neuroscience- to observe, the observer must do a minimum amount of blurring. in other words, clarity demands sacrifice. i guess i’m left with many unanswered questions, but the one i return to most is this: what am i sacrificing in my own perception to hold my truths steady?
