You no longer need specialised compute services for long-running and / or full *nix workloads. You no longer need container hosting PaaS. Docker AND rapid start AND global AND long-running. Wow. The only reason that non-GPU compute still isn't free is the artificially high margin that hyperscalers maintain over energy cost + capex - much closer to software (public clouds are in effect SaaS themselves) But with the massive GPU buildout, the math is changing. Suddenly training and inference compute is sold at a price much closer to underlying costs. Which has profound implications for non-GPU compute. If a futures market existed for compute, the long end of the curve for non-GPU compute 5-10y from now would be approaching zero. Massive arbitrage opportunity. The next hyperscaler will take advantage of that, and the time to do this is now. Most likely by "horizontalizing" like airlines did - the software layer will get decoupled from the underlying commodity hardware.
