When I first watched Sex and the City last year, soon after I turned 30, I was quite judgemental of Carrie Bradshaw. Although I’d chosen to enter my 30s single and experimental, like her, instead of seeing my previous relationship through to marriage, I instead found myself judging her dresses as too floozy and her writing too simplistic and her attitude too carefree. Going out every night, meeting new people, buying more shoes than she could afford… I couldn’t help but wonder, “What kind of 30-year-old does that?” Lol. I realised my reaction to her came from the internalised voices of convention that, growing up, had taught me to equate marriage with success and normalcy, and womanhood with decorum and self-sacrifice. Doesn’t matter what you want, or how much, just settle tf down. Those voices still do surround me, from suspicious landladies (not just landlords) to relatives and even people younger than me, all reminding me in their own ways that the life I lead does not match what they think a woman, especially a Brahmin woman, of my age should be doing. When I’m not thinking about them tho, I remember that I’m actually living a life — more interesting people than I can do justice to, way too many stories, dresses, makeup, art, work, and many challenges too, of course, if you’ll read the article below — but I’m finally being true to myself; as much as a nefarious concept like that allows. As the eldest daughter to perfectionistic Tamil Brahmin parents, not doing exactly what the elders want is anxiety-inducing, at the least, and life-threatening, at worst. But this life is worth fighting for, I think. Referring to her is a cliche, I know, but Carrie was one of TV’s first female protagonists to portray women as desiring beings, full humans with their own whims and fancies that are okay, even if occasionally stupid, to attend to. I thought of her as I sat in my room with a view and put up my latest dp, which a new friend in another town clicked as I was talking in full flow, makeup, earrings, going out, stupid romantic and financial choices, et al. Full column for @ndtv linked in the next tweet. Pls read, share, RT, and send flying kisses

I'm thrilled to share that my debut book of narrative nonfiction will be published @AlephBookCo. After nervous weeks of hearing my sample manuscript described as everything from "too raw" to the "voice of a generation", I am terrified—what’s it going to be? You decide. In 2024.
