I tell you I inhaled this book, I mean I read it in one sitting, then 7 times over again. I've recommended it 57 times, gifted 12 copies, and lovingly annotated it on 6 flights.\n\nDonald Braben's Scientific Freedom is an eulogy to scientific discovery, autopsied while it was still alive. \n\nHe predicted the current landscape of research, 17 years before it happened. We went from 500 people who could conduct and execute on research to 50,000 locked in cages of incremental work. Young scientists don't even bother anymore (they just leave).\n\nWe didn't get dumber. We built a system that punishes risk. I would argue that most Nobel-winning discoveries from the 20th century would be rejected today (too weird! Too slow! Too uncertain!)\n\nSince 2008:\n> Peer review times have tripled\n> Federal grant success rates fall below 20%\n> First-time PI age is approaching 50\n> (new!) Research funding cuts up to 43%\n\nI've spent the last few weeks mapping what Braben saw coming and stress-testing his arguments in 2025, what he missed, new challenges, and what we can adapt from here. virtue we've lost as a result of generative speed is courtesy and nobody talks about the cost\n\nInstantaneity has made consistency feel trivial. Showing up 10 mins late to a Zoom is normal. Changing dinner plans while the other person is about to head out is fine. Not giving a word of warning until after the fact is tolerated. \n\nBut some of us need rhythm, not randomness. I need to wake at 6 am if I want to write, which means no, I can't stay up until 4 am waiting for you to maybe show up. My protected morning hours aren't negotiable. My deep work blocks aren't flexible.\n\nAnd we're supposed to just be okay with it. We've created a culture where needing advance notice means you're rigid and asking too much. Where protecting your time means you lack adventure and joy.\n\nCreativity requires consistency. Great thinking needs uninterrupted time. Excellent work borne out of chaos is the exception, not the rule.\n\nIronically, the same people who preach \"move fast and break things\" have assistants managing their calendars with military precision.\n\nKeating says to seize the day, but you can't let your day be I tell you I inhaled this book, I mean I read it in one sitting, then 7 times over again. I've recommended it 57 times, gifted 12 copies, and lovingly annotated it on 6 flights.\n\nDonald Braben's Scientific Freedom is an eulogy to scientific discovery, autopsied while it was still alive. \n\nHe predicted the current landscape of research, 17 years before it happened. We went from 500 people who could conduct and execute on research to 50,000 locked in cages of incremental work. Young scientists don't even bother anymore (they just leave).\n\nWe didn't get dumber. We built a system that punishes risk. I would argue that most Nobel-winning discoveries from the 20th century would be rejected today (too weird! Too slow! Too uncertain!)\n\nSince 2008:\n> Peer review times have tripled\n> Federal grant success rates fall below 20%\n> First-time PI age is approaching 50\n> (new!) Research funding cuts up to 43%\n\nI've spent the last few weeks mapping what Braben saw coming and stress-testing his arguments in 2025, what he missed, new challenges, and what we can adapt from here.
