You must be one of four things to raise right now: - AI high flier - seed co with the promise of being an AI high-flying company (extra points if you are young) - American dynamism/reindustrialization company - Bio enabled by AI

Vertical-AI is hot. I get it, but as a long time vertical software investor, I think a lot of these apps are missing the forest for the trees by overemphasizing the AI and under developing the workflows around it. A co-pilot may be a great start that grows the business quickly, but what you really want to do is embed into the user's workflows and identify sticky ways to really improve that. Too many pitches I see are absent of a thoughtful approach here.

Okay no shade, but actually yes some shade here, some of the advice I see on X about pitching/interacting with VCs is absolute trash.

VC is a services business. We exist because of the entrepreneurs we serve. Feels like folks forget that sometimes.

Some of these AI-backed companies are flying from a revenue perspective, but on the back end their churn is atrocious and/or the applications don't do what they say they are going to do or worse have very little actual committed usage. Very smart people are investing in them. Is the underwriting belief as simple as eventually they will figure it out and stop churning customers? Genuinely curious as I just can not get myself comfortable with the some of these profiles and trying to challenge my beliefs here.

Tons of funding and excitement going into reindustrialization (which I love!) but reality is most startups default to selling to defense/aerospace (where $$ is), but these are actually already onshore by necessity...so it's more of expanding/improving capacity vs. bringing it back. Core challenge still very much remains: its cheaper to buy finished product from China than to purchase the raw materials here. We must rethink incentives (blanket tariffs IMO aren't answer) to offset cost disparities, reduce regulatory burden w/o sacrificing standards, and significantly invest in workforce development...

IMO Some of the best folks in venture right now are in the emerging manager camp (although I hate that term)- low ego, high hustle, and just so much fun to collaborate with...

I absolutely love the Bay Area, but man the energy in NYC is infectious. City is just so alive.

Manufacturing represents ~10% of US GDP (~$2.3T) It's estimated that 2.1M jobs will go unfilled by 2030. We're hurdling towards a cliff that has very real impact on economy. Need more smart folks in space and there is no better time.

I go through a lot of ups and downs with the VC job and my feelings towards it all, but today was one of those days where I just felt so fired up. Met with such incredible founders working on really big ideas and it gave me such energy. 🙏

I am seeing a rise (and I have a personal interest in) this camp of reinvisioning SMBs. The obvious example is many vertical software solutions (procore, service titan etc.) but some of the more recent trends around SMB acquisition models or re-imagining SMB employee incentives are super interesting. They have very real value and should exist, I personally love many of the ideas, but I’m just not convinced they are best suited for venture.
