I thought people didn’t want the government telling them what they can and cannot do

My father’s visiting me from my home country, after 8 years (!!!) of not seeing him. He’s also an interventional cardiologist, and I followed in his footsteps. I had the pleasure of showing him around my hospital, introducing him to my amazing colleagues, showing him the cath labs, and taking him through one of my recent heart stent procedures. He’s a veteran of these, having done this for almost 35 years before retirement and he quizzed me on my technique 🤣 Surreal moment for me. Dr. and Dr. Panhwar. I have humble beginnings, and we never had money. Still, my parents gave up all their own comforts in life, and fought against all odds, to put their kids through school, and the biggest reason I am where I am in life now is because of them. Everything I know about resilience, determination and grit is because of my folks. Moving to the United States after having grown up my entire life in a “third world country” was one of the hardest challenges of my life. As a kid, my life now was not just unimaginable, I didn’t even know that something like this could exist! It’s not that I didn’t dream about it. I didn’t even know I *could* dream about it. That gives you a lot of perspective in life, and the daily problems we face. Makes me proud and humble to share my success with them now and show them what they have achieved. I remind myself daily to never forget where I came from. This is the classic immigrant doctor story. I moved to the US to be able to become the best doctor I could be, provide world class medical and cardiovascular care to underserved communities, and to also take care of my family - I am now able to do all that. It meant a lot of sacrifice - haven’t seen my family in 8 years, or been home in that time. Many other immigrant doctors are the same, and immigrant doctors like myself are proud to provide essential healthcare to millions of underserved Americans. Immigration is what makes America great! PS: In classic brown dad fashion he doesn’t smile for photos haha. Those with Asian/brown parents get it 🤣

This belief is literally why tech has failed at medicine. People are not pieces of code that can be simply optimized. Every doctor learns within a few months of practice that patients and medicine are not alway neat little algorithms and decision trees. Wild unpredictable shit happens that doesn’t make sense, *all the time*.

Interesting debate on this. As an interventional cardiologist, I can be woken up from sleep to treat a patient at 3am with a heart attack and I have to be on top of my game at 3 am or the patient dies. I love this job, and I had some brutal years of training/no sleep that prepared me to do this. But what I could do without is all the BS clerical work/paper pushing, and if that could be magically taken away, my life would be infinitely better. I don't mind the 3am wake up at all.

The White House released a statement today saying Trump has chronic venous insufficiency - a benign condition of aging. You get older, you have wear and tear. It is a NORMAL process of aging. No big deal. Everyone in the replies here trying to diagnose him with some random crazy condition based on just photos - extremely irresponsible and everyone was wrong. Of course, political bias plays into it too. Inb4 the reply guys: yes, could they be hiding something? Sure. But I like to live in reality. People should stop trying to diagnose people on the internet.
