People who say this about autism have exclusively dealt with the high functioning autist, who perhaps has a revulsion to wearing socks. When I was first teaching in public school I had a 4th grade autistic student who regularly wet himself, could not speak beyond moans, often hit and bit out of frustration, could not read or write. If you don’t think parents and children deserve a cure for this, you are either a very evil or very deluded person.

Someone I know and love dearly had this happen. His girlfriend had an abortion even though he pleaded with her, asked her to marry him, said he’d raise the child alone and ask nothing from her, anything she wanted. She had an abortion anyway and it completely destroyed him. We don’t talk about what abortion does to men, and they’re not allowed to either, but I can only imagine how many men have been broken by this.

My freshman yr of college I was placed in a dorm with a Haitian roommate. I was 16, she was 22. I was on the crew team and had to get up at 5:00 every morning for practice. She had a boyfriend back in Haiti and stayed up almost every night until 2 or 3 AM talking very loudly on our shared phone, with the light on. It was torture. I could not sleep, I was barely able to stay awake in classes, but I was afraid to say anything to her. Finally, when I felt at the point of some kind of mental breakdown, I told my mom what was going on. She was furious and wanted to call the school immediately to complain. The thought of my mother doing this was more horrifying than talking to this woman, so I begged her not to and said I’d deal with it. The next day, I asked my roommate if she could please take the phone outside the door to talk, and could turn off the lights because I had hardly been able to sleep in weeks. She started to cry - how she was affecting me seemed to never have occurred to her. The complete lack of consideration and her shock when I addressed it was hard to wrap my head around. It’s just not how most Americans function. I know this is just an anecdote and I’m sure, like any people, there is a range of personality/aptitude within what is also undoubtedly general disposition & cultural norms that clash quite jarringly with ours. And this is the issue, isn’t it? If you are bringing in thousands of ppl from other countries whose values/ideals differ drastically from yours, you are inevitably going to change your homeland. And just as a parent’s first duty is to their own children (and they would not bring ppl into their home who might negatively influence or even harm their child), so too our gov has a responsibility first to her citizens, but this seems to have been wholly forgotten. (Side-note: this roommate also frequently stole things from me, mainly clothes…and also cried when I asked her about it)

I saw an idea recently that I thought was lovely…public libraries that are open late every night so ppl can socialize, as an alternative to bars or sitting alone at home. Would be especially perfect for introverts to socialize comfortably and for older people who are lonely.

This English teacher & Harvard grad just voted for Trump/Vance. After so many months of waiting for this, feels surreal 🙏❤️ 🇺🇸 Also, NO on Florida’s amendment 4, which allows for taxpayer-funded, late term abortions and for minors to obtain abortions without parental consent

I have lots of stories about men. A man who let me use his phone during a rainstorm when the trains in Philly weren’t working and I had no way to get home. A stranger who changed my tire on a busy highway. A mechanic who fixed my son’s car and didn’t charge us. An elderly man who bought my 5 yo an ice cream and made her day. The man who saved my son’s life by thinking & acting quickly during his birth. The man who is a dear friend, always giving encouragement & understanding, bringing humor & wisdom to life. The man who raised me, taught me to name the constellations and to love the sea and who will drive an hour just to collect fallen branches from my yard after a storm, and who I am lucky enough to call dad. Teachers, doctors, brothers, fathers, friends…so many men I am grateful exist.

In high school I attended an all girls’ boarding school. There was a girl who was absolutely insufferable, not particularly intelligent or nice, tiresome, irritating, and I had several classes with her. One evening I told my mom over the phone that I felt badly because I truly hated this girl, and did not know how to move past it. Hating her made me miserable, I felt small and mean. My mom told me to buy her a candy bar, write an encouraging note and leave it anonymously in her school mailbox. I thought this sounded crazy, and didn’t really want to do it, but I did anyway. And it was incredible, the feeling of hatred I had for this girl completely vanished, almost instantly. Hatred is a heavy thing to bear and I learned more from this experience than perhaps anything else that year.

My daughter is turning 12 and we were talking about what she wanted to do for her birthday. She’s my quiet, introspective kid and was silent for a bit then said “can you rent a field?” I was taken aback for a moment “a field? Like you want to invite your friends and maybe get a bounce house or something at a park?” “No,” she says, “just a field, maybe with some trees, just for me.” “You want to go there by yourself?” “Yea. And sit and think, maybe walk around.” “All by yourself?” I clarify. “For the whole day? That’s what you want for your birthday?” “Yea,” she says “that’s what I want.” Love this girl so much

I know so many people have already said much about this, but I’ll just add my small voice: when my daughter died at 6 months in the womb, I wept every day in the shower for almost a year, I did not want to wake up in the mornings, but all day I smiled, I talked to people, I laughed and pretended I wasn’t dead inside.

The space and location are absolutely perfect, now the work to get it ready, which I have 4 months to do. Can’t wait to share progress pictures and a website with you! You can have an academia that is majority female, but it will be (as majority-female departments in today's universities already are) oriented toward other goals than open debate and the unfettered pursuit of truth. And if your academia doesn't pursue truth, what good is it? We simply have to restore fair rules. Right now we have a nominally meritocratic system in which it is illegal for women to lose. Let's make hiring meritocratic in substance and not just name, and we will see how it shakes out. Make it legal to have a masculine office culture again. Remove the HR lady's veto power.”
