I condemn in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Political Bureau Chairman of the Hamas resistance movement. This was a murder of the most heinous kind, plainly designed to derail ongoing talks aimed at ending the carnage in Gaza that has claimed over 40,000 lives. It is patently clear that this could only have been carried out in an environment of utter impunity. Only the heedless and unconscionable will not see the need to intensify pressure on Israel to stop their murderous rampage. I am deeply concerned about what this tragedy would mean for the Palestinian people, who have been already been so cruelly subjected to so much pain, hardship and suffering for so many decades. Detractors who have criticised me for meeting with Ismail Haniyeh in the past, fail to appreciate Haniyeh’s profound desire for a peaceful Middle East and a Palestinian nation restored to its rightful dignity. I mourn the loss of a dear friend and a valiant advocate for his people. Al-Fatihah.

The weight of grief bears down on me at the news of the passing of my honoured and cherished friend: Dr Manmohan Singh. Obituaries, essays and books a plenty there will surely be about this great man, celebrating him as the architect of India’s economic reforms. As Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh was the midwife of India’s emergence as one of the world’s economic giants. I had the rare privilege of witnessing the early years of these transformative policies first-hand while we both served as finance ministers during the 1990s. We shared a fervent commitment to the war against corruption — even collaborating on unravelling a major case. The praise that will follow in the days ahead will be truly well-deserved. Dr Manmohan Singh, slightly awkward as a politician but undeniably upright, steadfast and resolute as a statesman, leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come. To me, he will be all that and much more. Not many people know this, and it is time that I share it with Malaysians: during the years of my incarceration, he extended a kindness that he didn’t have to — one that was neither politically expedient nor, as one can imagine, appreciated by the Malaysian government at that time. Yet, true to his character, he did it anyway. He offered scholarships for my children, particularly my son, Ihsan. Although I had declined the gracious offer, such a gesture undoubtedly showed his extraordinary humanity and generosity, demonstrative, as the Bard would have it, of a man so full of “the milk of human kindness”. In those dark days, as I navigated the labyrinth of imprisonment, he stood by me as a true friend. Such acts of quiet magnanimity defined him, and they will remain etched in my heart forever. Sewaktu dunia dibadai kemarau mencari contoh dan suri teladan, kita wajar terus menjadikan murabbi terunggul dan teragung umat, iaitu Rasulullah SAW sebagai Uswatun Hasanah. Nabi Muhammad SAW adalah murabbi yang wajib diberi sorotan dengan penuh perhatian, bukan sahaja keperibadiannya namun mesti mencakup sisi kepemimpinan negara, masyarakat dan keluarga khususnya dalam konteks model negara bangsa Madinah. Cita-cita negara yang madani tidak lepas dari mengambil ibrah dan model Piagam Madinah yang dipelopori oleh Baginda berasaskan formula kepelbagaian dalam bingkai kesatuan bertiangkan keadilan dan ihsan. Allah SWT berfirman dalam surah Al Ahzab ayat 21, لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِيْ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ اُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوا اللّٰهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْاٰخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللّٰهَ كَثِيْرًاۗ “Sungguh, pada (diri) Rasulullah benar-benar ada suri teladan yang baik bagimu, (yaitu) bagi orang yang mengharap (rahmat) Allah dan (kedatangan) hari Kiamat serta yang banyak mengingat Allah."

New Year clean up

Malam tadi saya telah membuat panggilan telefon kepada sahabat lama saya, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, bagi mengucapkan tahniah dan bertanyakan khabar susulan pelantikan beliau sebagai Ketua Penasihat kepada Kerajaan Interim Bangladesh baru-baru ini. Prof. Yunus mempunyai sejarah hubungan yang baik dengan Malaysia. Justeru, saya telah memberi jaminan kesediaan Malaysia untuk membantu Bangladesh mengembalikan keamanan dan ketenteraman ke arah pembangunan semula negara itu. Saya juga gembira dengan jaminan yang diberikan oleh beliau untuk melindungi dan memberi layanan yang saksama kepada semua warga Bangladesh termasuk golongan minoriti. Prof. Yunus turut menjemput saya untuk melakukan lawatan pendek ke Bangladesh dalam masa yang terdekat bagi mengukuhkan lagi hubungan persaudaraan di antara kedua-dua negara. --------- Yesterday I made a phone call to my old friend, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, to congratulate him personally on his recent appointment as the Chief Advisor for the Interim Government of Bangladesh. Prof. Yunus has long-standing good ties with Malaysia. Thus, I assured him that Malaysia stands ready to help and support the interim Government in rebuilding and restoring peace and security in Bangladesh. I am very pleased that Prof. Yunus has given his assurances to protect the rights of all Bangladeshis including minorities. Prof. Yunus also has invited me to undertake a short visit to Bangladesh as soon as possible to further strengthen the brotherly relationship between the two countries.

I extend my heartiest congratulations to Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as Chief Adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh. His vast experience promises to guide the nation with wisdom and integrity. As a new dawn rises over Bangladesh, bringing forth a renewal driven by the vigour and vision of its youth, I am reminded of the immortal words of the great Bengali painter-poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore: “Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action; Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.” At this pivotal moment in history, I wish the people of Bangladesh every success and the brightest of futures.
