Phillies are going to be 93-69, a feat that if you asked me 5 years ago I would over the moon about, but the reality is that they’re going to get gentleman’s swept in the playoffs against whoever once again as an aging roster kicks the can another year. They have the 4th highest payroll in the sport and yet they have only 4 good players that they are actually paying legit money to this year. They’ll probably make a couple moves at the deadline, I’ll sort of buy-in because they’ll inevitably go on this hot streak in August that will have the Bank rocking, but that will probably be the peak of the season. Bats will go cold in October with RISP, bullpen will leak oil, but Wheeler, Sanchez, and Ranger will deal and probably have an 1.45 ERA combined in their starts to make the pain hurt even more asking, “what if did [this]?” “what if they did [that]?” and so on. Schwarber, Ranger, and JT will be free agents. Schwarber has been the backbone to this whole run, but are they really going to give a DH a bag? Ranger has been the silent assassin since he basically stepped into the big leagues, but are they going to give a guy that maxes out at like 92 MPH a bag who also has injury concerns? JT has been one of the most insufferable players to ever exist, but he’s obviously valuable and they have no contingency plan - will they bring him back? Then boom, all the sudden we’re the 2012 Phillies again next year, will have a couple legends that gave us such fond memories the last 4+ years who are then on the backend of their careers essentially chasing milestones. Wheeler will be 36, Harper, Nola and Trea 33 with those four due about $600 million combined since starting next year. Bohm will be turning 30 next August in his walk year and we still have no idea if he’s a legit good player or just a 6’5” Jean Segura who plays an average third base. Stott, if he’s still here, will be 28 and I’ll still be defending him under my breath still as a .243 platoon hitter with a 89 OPS+. Marsh, if still here, will be 28 and he will still be a platoon player that you talk yourself into if they can get a good righty combo. We are screwed.
