nerd project: NutriData.\nShow protein nutritional data to product pages on online grocery stores.\n\nWhile doing my online shopping this morning, I was annoyed that I couldn't easily tell if a product was nutritionally healthy or not. Germany has this thing called \"Nutri-Score\" but it is completely useless. I needed to know macro data, especially protein.\n\nSo, as any nerd would, I whipped up a Chrome extension to show me some relevant info. Now I can see protein grams per €, protein to carbs ratio, and protein grams per 100 calories for any product on Rewe (German grocery store).\n\nHere's how I built it:\n\n1- I dumped the page's body HTML to Gemini 1.5 Pro and asked it to find me the selectors for the relevant info and build a base script that extracts them (given Gemini's massive context window, it's perfect for tasks like this. No more manual wrangling!)\n\n2- I scaffolded a chrome extension folder and with the help of the @cursor_ai editor, rounded up the edge cases, made the UI and made it reusable (can be applied to any shop, not just Rewe, just need to provide the HTML selectors for that store).\n\n3- made a README, and made the code public at \nAll in one hour! This would have taken me half a day if I was coding it from scratch.\n\nAs I said before, this is the golden age for programming. \n\nTraditionally, typing speed was a big factor in how fast you shipped code, AI levels that playing field. Now, what matters is your speed of thought. \n\nI was never a fast typer, and I make a lot of typos. In Amazon DE, every food product has nutritional data like this.\n\nAlso, Walmart has nutritional data, but each product has a different \"serving size\", and it's completely arbitrary. Sometimes it's 140 calories per cup, sometimes it's per 2 spoons, sometimes it's per a handful of chips. In Amazon DE, every food product has nutritional data like this.\n\nAlso, Walmart has nutritional data, but each product has a different \"serving size\", and it's completely arbitrary. Sometimes it's 140 calories per cup, sometimes it's per 2 spoons, sometimes it's per a handful of chips. Germany has this thing called \"Nutri-Score\" but it is completely useless. I needed to know macro data, especially protein.\n\nSo, as any nerd would, I whipped up a Chrome extension to show me some relevant info. Now I can see protein grams per €, protein to carbs ratio, and protein grams per 100 calories for any product on Rewe (German grocery store).\n\nHere's how I built it:\n\n1- I dumped the page's body HTML to Gemini 1.5 Pro and asked it to find me the selectors for the relevant info and build a base script that extracts them (given Gemini's massive context window, it's perfect for tasks like this. No more manual wrangling!)\n\n2- I scaffolded a chrome extension folder and with the help of the @cursor_ai editor, rounded up the edge cases, made the UI and made it reusable (can be applied to any shop, not just Rewe, just need to provide the HTML selectors for that store).\n\n3- made a README, and made the code public at \nAll in one hour! This would have taken me half a day if I was coding it from scratch.\n\nAs I said before, this is the golden age for programming. \n\nTraditionally, typing speed was a big factor in how fast you shipped code, AI levels that playing field. Now, what matters is your speed of thought. \n\nI was never a fast typer, and I make a lot of typos. But now, I am now orders of magnitudes more productive now than a couple of years ago, and I can spend most of my time tinkering, and thinking about product ideas, and not on typing lines of code.
