How did we grow Altpocket to 140,000+ users with $0 marketing spend? In late 2016, @astrooed created a tool for managing his investments in smaller crypto coins (#shitcoins). The problem? Different altcoins required different exchanges, and some people were even using Excel sheets to track their investments. So, how do you market a product with zero budget? We started by posting on popular crypto forums, and the first few hundred sign-ups came from there. But the real growth came from leveraging trends and posting on Reddit. For instance, during a crypto hype, we created a satirical portfolio that looked like @elonmusk had sold all his crypto to go all in on Litecoins. This post went viral, getting 40k upvotes and bringing tens of thousands of visitors to our tool, with many signing up. Another key to our growth was creating a product perfect for bragging about trading success. Users shared their portfolios on social media and forums, spreading the word like wildfire. We even raised $60k from our users over one weekend through a self-hosted crowdfunding effort.
