I am a life-long supporter of the Palestinian search for freedom and statehood , but this morning am feeling only utter revulsion, horror and depression at the press descriptions of yet more innocents massacred. No one, least of all children, should ever have to endure violence and fear, and the kind of atrocity carried out by Hamas is only going to intensify the ongoing oppression, dispossession and occupation, as well as provoking retaliatory waves of bombings and killings which are already leading to the deaths of countless more innocent children. Hamas has not only committed a barbaric outrage with its abominable ISIS-like tactics, I fear it has also done incalculable and lasting damage to the just cause of their own people, entrenched the hawks and haters and ethnic cleansers, and made the search for peace, justice and freedom more difficult than ever.

The Israelis are eliminating one of the last Christian Palestinians strongholds in the West Bank and the place I chose to stay when I was researching the Palestinian Christians in From the Holy Mountain. It is a place with an incredibly ancient history, a cradle of Christianity, and its people have some of the closest DNA matches to the people of the time of Christ. Why is no one reporting this?

It has damaged or destroyed 34 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza and has killed over 40,000 civilians (including 113 journists & 200 health care workers) as well as injuring 80,000+ more, with some 15,000+ missing, presumed dead under the rubble. Israel is responsible for unprecedented civilian casualties, after dropping the equivalent of five Hiroshima bombs on an area a quarter the size of London. It performs almost daily pogroms on the unarmed farmers and shepherds of the West Bank. It has total impunity in completely ignoring international law, and it does so with Western arms, finance and full diplomatic support. There is no parallel to this appalling mass-suppression of freedom and Israel deserves instant and immediate sanctions to make itself fall into line and return to the fold of international law and human rights.

Why are our leaders collaborating with this overkill? Almost everyone in Gaza has already lost their home once in 1948 when they were driven out of their lands at the creation of Israel. The only long term alternative to genocide or further cleansing is Two States, side by side.
