Well, your correct response should be "the project is unmaintained and no one should be using the code since it's buggy, stale, and no one that wrote the entirety of it cares to fix it." That would probably portray reality a bit more realistically

I've always said, "you don't know it until you can teach it." If you can't explain it, but can do it, you don't actually know it - you just know the recipe. Sometimes that's good enough, but not to those who want to be subject matter experts.
