The most painful, frustrating and difficult transaction I had on Etsy was the one experience that transformed my Etsy shop into a more successful and productive business. If I had not been mindful, patient and willing to allow the experience, I would have lost the opportunity to evolve my shop. Let me begin with a bit of history: I experienced a major set back to my graphic art business in 2018 having survived the Camp Fire of Paradise, California. Losing all my vintage and antique ephemera, I had to start over, as well as rely on the digital surplus I had stored on my computer (one of the only things I got out of my house before losing everything). Living in a hotel room for the next two months, I spent hours reworking, recreating and re-purposing old digital images in any way to stay afloat. I hit antique shops several days a week, hunting old ephemera. Then, I bought a new digital camera, a Nikon D-7500. I took photos of the illustrations in the old books, downloaded the photos to my computer, digitized the images, edited in Corel PSP or Photoshop, and then listed on Etsy. However, this wasn’t enough to pull me back to Pre-Fire success. The new camera gave me the idea to begin taking photos and creating digital grunge overlays, which I saw selling well on Etsy. I also relied on my own artwork of simple line drawings of crafting supplies and elements, such as doodle frames. I made the shift to selling images in PNG format. For a few years, I kept the offerings simple, such as single image listings and small bundles, since most of my time and energy were spent in recovery mode. I began by offering overlay designs in black with a transparent background. Then, I began taking photos of more and more grungy surfaces, rust in particular. I sold these images as either backgrounds or as JPEG overlays. Now, here’s where I stepped into it, so to speak, learning my greatest lesson as a businesswoman. I was selling a listing a few years back of rust design ‘overlays’. The digital images were in JPEG format, but I used the terms, ‘overlay’ and ‘background’ in the listing. Using a JPEG as an overlay is possible when editing raster layers in editing software. After a sale, I was messaged by the buyer. She wasn’t happy. Not only wasn’t she happy, she was aggressive and offensive, demanding her money back. Her main complaint was that the images did not have transparency. She understood the images to be transparent so that when she edited in layers, the bottom layer would show through. And, so on. You get the idea. Since I didn’t specifically use ‘transparent’ or ‘PNG’ in the listing, I was confused as to why she was upset. Well, semantics can be a bitch. And, left to any interpretation. After several messages back and forth, getting us both nowhere, I let out a sigh, fell back into my office chair, rolled a few feet away from the battlefield with one thought in mind; How can I make this customer happy? Didn’t give up, but I gave up fighting and pushing back, releasing the present challenge. Sure, I could have gotten angry. Shouted louder. Ended the conversation. Money back? I don’t do that. As I sat there, open to anything, mental exhaustion setting in, and still wanting her to go away happy, the solution rolled into my mind like soft waves lapping a warm shore. Yes, she wanted, and expected, only the red rust pattern of the photos! I understood! But how? How could I make that happen? Remember, I was still learning how to work with digital photography and editing in this new way, so as I understood the idea, the execution seemed like solving Quantum Physics. After some thought, I sent the buyer a message outlining what I believed she wanted. She confirmed. For the next 48 hours, I attempted every possible way creating a red rust pattern overlay in PNG format, creating three proofs, of which I was in awe. I sent the buyer the proofs and example photos. No peacock could have shown more pride than me that day. After a couple of hours, she sent her response..... I’ll give you one guess. She wasn’t happy. And, not the least bit appreciative. I sat stunned, reading the message several times over. I almost cried, I have to admit. Smoke still wafting from my ears, I let the fatigue and disappointment wash over me. After a few more messages, we parted ways. Learning experience? You bet! For the rest of the day, I thought of nothing else. Hour after hour editing, teaching myself a new skill, getting little sleep, I was a bit miffed. Then, again, I let the unfortunate experience go. As I continued working, another thought came to me: What if that buyer wasn’t the only one? What if there are other buyers thinking and expecting the same as her? Wouldn’t they contact me? Yes, I am naive. The next week was spent creating listings of digital red rust overlays in PNG format. I listed a couple of sets of 12 overlays a piece and crossed my fingers. Four years later, rust overlays in PNG format are my best sellers. Painful? Oh, yes. But what an opportunity I had! In my most awful, painful, difficult experiences, there’s been an opportunity for growth and transformation. While I wish I could have created a happy outcome for that customer, I’ll be grateful for the rewards of success and growth. If you’ve read this post to the end, thank you. I hope my words have helped and sparked inspiration for your creative journey and endeavors. #EtsySeller #aiartist #digitalart #businesstips
