Lane certainly listened to Algernon's piano. And Algernon's willingness to agree with the lie just seems like a \"fuck you\" from Oscar Wilde to the both the upper-class and the lower-class. It says \"We all know society is silly, but we participate anyways\". \n\n2. Lane claims it isn't polite to listen to a Lord's piano. But Algernon, his friend and his relatives turn out to be so impolite and scandalous, that Lane's comment seems like a mockery of the word 'polite'. This irony mirror's today's social justice where the loudest champions of morality are often the most immoral of us. \n\n3. Algernon is sorry that Lane does not listen to his piano, even though it is not possible that Lane does not hear. He then adds an extra layer to the lie, claiming that he does not play accurately. In my mind, this is code for \"I can't play piano to save my life so I'm just freestyling nonsense. But in real life, I am quite competent\". This is hilarious because we will soon find out that Algernon is infact not competent in real life.
