By June, I began having digestion issues in Malaysia. I visited multiple doctors, but no one could figure out what was wrong. Finally, after months of struggle, in September 2019, I was diagnosed with H. pylori infection. I went through strong antibiotics and hoped things would get better. But then came another shock. My father started having pain in his mouth. We went from one doctor to another, and no one could find the real cause. I returned to India in November 2019 for a full checkup, and the reports shattered me - it was cancer. I cried helplessly. I didn’t know what to do. To add to the chaos, I had just received my dream job offer as a Data Analyst in Malaysia in September 2019. But my previous employer refused to cancel my work visa. In Malaysia, your visa is tied to your employer - if the old visa isn’t cancelled, you can’t join a new job. For the entire month of October, I was stuck. No job, no income, visiting the Indian Embassy, the Malaysian labour department, lawyers but nothing helped. Eventually, my employer cancelled the visa but deducted nearly ₹4 lakhs from my pending salary. Imagine this: I had no job, my health was falling apart, my savings were gone, my father was battling cancer, and my mind was breaking down. I could barely sleep those nights. Later, I went back to India, started my father’s treatment, and stayed for his initial chemo and radiotherapy sessions. It was painful beyond words. Then, I went back to Malaysia again to join my new job - working in a multinational bank as a Data Analyst. Work-wise, things were great. But physically and mentally, I was drained. My treatment continued there, and it was 10x more expensive than in India. Thankfully, my company’s insurance helped me through. Then came 2020 - the COVID year. Malaysia shut down earlier than India. Work from home began. Isolation added another layer of stress. And back home, my father’s condition deteriorated. Doctors told us he had only six months left. I was breaking inside but had to stay strong. On top of that, due to the pandemic, I had to search for a new job again. Finding a job during COVID, while being stuck in another country, was nearly impossible. After 5 months of constant effort, one company finally gave me a chance. I returned to India in March 2021, wearing a shield and PPE kit during peak COVID times. Started working from home. Then, just two months later, in May 2021, my father passed away. The only relief was, I got to see him in his final moments. If I hadn’t come back when I did, I might have missed it. From late 2019 to 2021 - those were the toughest years of my life. I faced health problems, job struggles, financial loss, visa issues, and the death of my father all back-to-back. But I survived. Slowly, I healed - mentally and physically. Look at the numbers of Tamil Nadu, they are growing at the rate of more than 11% and this growth just does not come from one sector, they have all kinds of businesses. For example, soon diwali will come, you will purchase the crackers, most of them come from Sivakasi, you buy clothes, most of them come from Tamil Nadu. They even have excellent IT infrastructure in Chennai. They manufacture hard engineering goods as well. Their female are one of the most educated and highly skilled. May all the states do something like this and grow phenomenally, so our country can grow more than 10% per year.

Sometimes, stepping outside India gives us perspective on what’s possible, and what we should demand back home.
